Who are we?

STFC is a world-leading science organisation, dedicated to pioneering science and technological research on behalf of the UK. 

What do we do?

STFC funds a variety of large science facilities across the UK and the rest of the world - from laboratories and supercomputers to particle accelerators, telescopes and satellites. Researchers from a huge variety of disciplines, like medicine and bioscience, environmental science and space science, use our facilities to conduct their research.

We support university-based research, innovation and skills development in astronomy, particle physics, nuclear physics, and space science.

We are a huge supporter of scientific and technological innovation in UK industry. Our award-winning business incubation programme (I-TAC) provides businesses with access to our facilities, office space and expertise. You will also find us working alongside big brands like Siemens, Rolls-Royce and Unilever, helping them improve their products and processes.

Our staff are based across our five UK sites:

  • Polaris House, Swindon
  • Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxfordshire
  • Daresbury Laboratory, Cheshire
  • Chilbolton Observatory, Hampshire
  • UK Astronomy Technology Centre, Edinburgh
