Detailed Description

The RAL Security team are looking to recruit Four (4) Security Shift Officers to join our team at RAL Laboratory on the Harwell Campus near Didcot, Oxfordshire.
We are here to provide and effective 24/7 Professional Security Service to a wide range of staff, tenants contractors and visitors from around the globe. The role will involve regular site and building patrols using site patrol vehicles and foot patrol. You will be actively promoting a security culture across our large facility.
As key members of the security team it is vital that You adhere to instructions of the Shift Supervisor and site policies & security standard operating procedures. We are looking for someone who has experience and the ability in handling sensitive situations in a confidential manner. You will be responsible for safeguarding classified and confidential information and materials and adhere to GDPR protocols.

As a key point of contact for many staff and visitors, You will be required to champion the Estates service in a positive manner. You will be escorting visitors and VIPS as required and providing directions and other relevant campus information to visitors & delivery drivers.

Key Accountabilities

  • Work according to the instructions of Shift Supervisor and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Work effectively using own initiative when unsupervised.

Role Responsibilities

  • Staff the security control room, providing instruction to all enquirers including switchboard calls and transfers
  • Control access to site, including automatic access control systems, proximity pass issue and issue of keys
  • Monitoring site activity outside and inside premises through observation during patrols and closed circuit television
  • Respond appropriately to all types of security incidents and intruders on to site
  • Recording & monitoring of any suspicious activity and taking any necessary action
  • Record information of Security incidents on computer systems and send to appropriate internal stakeholders
  • Actively monitor out of hours lone working activity
  • Contacting key staff during emergencies
  • Monitoring safety of critical scientific & engineering equipment Out of hours as requested
  • Promote a security culture across site
  • Patrol site on foot and vehicle, both internal and external, maintaining radio contact
  • Issue of Rail Tickets and manage taxi bookings out of hours
  • Daily radio checks, recording and updating of the site emergency contacts files and important documents
  • Promptly respond to reports of for suspicious packages
  • Fulfil both Security and Health and Safety roles whilst patrolling
  • Report incidents to management and Safety Health and Environment group
  • Conduct search of personnel baggage when required during critical threat level
  • Conduct regular vehicle searches and speed checks
  • Manage all on-site parking and issuing of vehicle infringement when required
  • Conducting general reception duties when required
  • Assisting with weekly fire alarm testing
  • Undertake annual shift working medical assessment
  • Attend all in house/external job related mandatory training as required
  • Ensure all relevant information are recorded for future reference in registers provided
  • Member of Alarm Investigation Team, responding to fire, first aid or other emergencies 24/7
  • Respond to Fire alarm including plant alarm activations during daytime and silent hours
  • Liaise and assist Emergency service when the need arises
  • Liaise with Emergency Controller Team and support them
  • Register visitors to site, providing site passes and parking permits
  • Assist with general enquires from staff and members of the public
  • Manual handling of barriers and cones as required
  • Assist with signage, traffic marshalling and directing visitors during events
  • Ensure shift hand-over information are communicated to on coming shifts appropriately
  • Use Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Operate specialist security software applications
  • Provide more general support for Estates and Operations team when there is a need to assist
  • Assist with any other reasonable management requests.

  • GCSE level education (or equivalent) including Maths and English (S)
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, word & outlook systems (S&I)
  • Previous experience in similar security role (S)
  • Excellent customer service skills (S)
  • Calm and quick thinking under pressure. Prepared to deal effectively with conflict, difficult situations and emergency incidents (S&I)
  • Must be prepared to deal effectively with all types of first aid emergencies (S&I)
  • Previous experience with working on 12 hour shifts (S&I)
  • The ability to follow instructions & adhere to procedures (S&I)
  • Evidence of working in a team environment (S&I)
  • Full UK driving license. (S)


  • Experience and or Qualifications in Line Management (S&I)
  • Recognized professional security qualifications (e.g. SIA, NVQ,) (S)
  • SIA License or NVQ2 Skills for Security (S)
  • First aid at work certificate. (S)
