The STFC Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) is a national centre of excellence for particle accelerator R&D. Accelerators is one of STFC’s key technologies underpinning future scientific research. ASTeC works with national facilities (ISIS neutron and muon source, Diamond Light Source and Central Laser Facility) and international partners (for example, CERN and the European Spallation Source), to meet UK and STFC strategic objectives in delivering future facilities, in the UK and internationally.  ASTeC is focused around the key accelerator skills and capabilities required to support these developments to exploit these to support broader societal and industrial challenges to the benefit of the UK.

The role has the following duties/responsibilities:

  • Develop and oversee a comprehensive and ambitious long-term strategy and vision for the Centre, exploiting synergies across STFC’s National Laboratories
  • Operation and evolution of the Accelerator Technology Centre, which currently studies all aspects of the science and technology of charged particle accelerators, ranging from large scale international and national research facilities through to specialised industrial and medical applications
  • Deliver  a world-class accelerator R&D programme to underpin the strategic development of future (STFC) accelerator based facilities
  • Strengthen strategic partnerships with key national and international organisations (particularly Universities and international laboratories). In particular, maintaining and developing the successful relationship with the Cockcroft Institute at Daresbury
  • Use the standing, reputation and involvement of ASTeC to enable and enhance international influence over scientific and investment decisions
  • Provide inspirational leadership of ASTeC, including sound financial, safety, risk and project management of the Centre and its associated programmes
  • Ensure that objectives and outputs of ASTeC make a tangible contribution to the STFC delivery plan
  • Contribute fully to the successful operation of STFC’s National Laboratories through close collaboration with other STFC Directors, and by taking an active role in Laboratory
  • Operations Board, recruitment and retention of skills and talent, ED&I and Wellbeing
  • Working closely with the Business and Innovation Directorate, strengthen collaborative working between academic and commercial partners at the laboratories and broader Campuses.

Essential:

  • Honours degree in an appropriate engineering or scientific subject
  • Proven track record of leading a large engineering or scientific team
  • Broad expertise of accelerator science principles and technologies
  • Recognised national leader in a particular field of accelerator technology/science
  • Excellent communication skills - ability to build rapport with and influence people at all levels
  • Excellent presentation skills - ability to inspire others, communicate vision and present information and ideas effectively to a wide audience
  • Leadership and vision to operate in an environment requiring both agility and a long term strategic approach
  • Ability to implement change and continuously improve the capabilities and performance of the Department
  • Team player-ability to contribute as a member of Operations Board
  • Sound problem solving skills
  • Good political judgement
  • High levels of motivation
  • Travel to other STFC sites and overseas.

Desirable:

  • Proven ability to deliver a world-leading accelerator R&D programme
  • Track record of delivering large scale accelerator projects to time, cost and quality
  • Knowledge of EU research initiatives, UK Universities, Research Councils and their funding mechanisms.
  • Experience of government gateway or bid processes
  • Higher degree
  • Senior Membership of a professional Institution ( FREng, F InstP, FIET)
  • Visiting professorship or equivalent  track record of HEI collaborative partnerships.
