UKRI is a new, independent, non-departmental public body, bringing together the functions of the seven Research Councils, Innovate UK, and Research England. The new body seeks to maximise value from government’s investment in research and innovation of over £6bn per annum by 2020. It will lead the overall strategic direction of research and innovation funding in the UK, pushing the frontiers of human knowledge through research, and delivering benefits for UK society and the economy through world-class research and business-led innovation. The Research Councils, Innovate UK, and Research England will continue to provide strategic direction to their disciplines and thematic areas and continue to control their own delegated budgets and manage institutes and facilities.

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest multidisciplinary research organisations, with our National Laboratories providing world-class research facilities and capabilities operated as a national research resource.

We combine world-class research facilities including the ISIS pulsed neutron and muon source and the Vulcan Petawatt Laser, with support for major high-profile science activities, such as the Diamond Light Source and the UK’s participation in international facilities such as CERN. We also operate important technology centre’s including the Hartree Centre, RAL Space and the National Satellite Test Facility, run by some of the world’s most talented staff, operating at the frontiers of advanced science and technology.

With sites including the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) at the Harwell campus in Oxfordshire, the Daresbury Laboratory at the Sci-Tech Daresbury Campus in Cheshire and the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh, all of which are developing communities of innovative businesses working within the research programmes, we are positioned to deliver advance scientific understanding and generate a remarkable variety of real-world benefits which shape societies and transform lives.

STFC’s Business and Innovation Directorate (BID) connects STFC’s facilities, research and technology program’s to business and the wider economy, delivering UK economic growth through spin-out companies, growing the research and innovation campuses, attracting inward investment and collaborative industrial R&D.

About the role:

We have an excellent opportunity for an exceptionally skilled and experienced leader, who will provide visible and inspiring initiative of the Directorate across STFC.

The Executive Director (ED) will be responsible for delivering a coordinated and embedded business and innovation strategy for STFC.  In addition, will have shared corporate accountability for the delivery of our Vision, Strategy and Delivery Plan as a member of the Executive Board; overseeing development of future corporate strategy, policy and plans to optimise delivery of STFC’s goals, ensuring effective corporate governance, meeting our statutory obligations, and continuously improving STFC’s overall performance.

The role will also have specific responsibility for the provision of high caliber professional services to STFC departments to develop and exploit commercial relationships and business opportunities, and to support collaborative ventures and initiatives in order to increase innovation outcomes and secure external income.

Directorate Responsibilities:

  • Acting as STFC’s strategic advisor on areas within the business, innovation and campuses portfolio
  • Working with the Executive Director for Strategy Planning and Communications, to strengthen strategic relationships including those with the Campus stakeholders and key business partners
  • Take a visible leadership role as a key member of Executive Board
  • Share corporate accountability for the delivery of STFC’s Vision, Strategic Delivery Plan, oversee development of future strategy, policy and plans to optimise delivery of STFC’s plan, ensure effective corporate governance and meeting of our statutory obligations; and continuously improve STFC’s overall performance
  • Act as a role model and champion for STFC’s organisational values, equality, diversity and inclusion code
  • Act as a senior ambassador for STFC at international, national and local levels
  • Work in close collaboration with other Executive Directors to:
    • Provide strategic support to motivate our people performance
    • Strengthen strategic relationships including those with key universities and overseas facilities
    • Maximise the exploitation and impact of our science for industry.
  • Reflect and enable the vision and aims of UK Research and Innovation
  • Undertake leadership or support and other ad-hoc activities as directed by the Executive Chair.

Corporate Services:

  • Work closely with the Department Directors, and STFC Business Partners to ensure that STFC and UKRI have:
    • The necessary financial controls and reporting (reflecting Managing Public Money)
    • The right people, in the right place, doing the right things, developing their skills and maximising their productivity in alignment with STFC and UKRI strategy
    • Appropriate governance structures, assurance as to the integrity of activities, risks that are identified and mitigated, information that is accurate and secure
    • A safe and healthy working environment for all staff, workers and visitors to all STFC sites and delivery of STFC’s environmental agenda.

UKRI supports research in areas that include animal health, agriculture and food security, and bioscience for health which includes research on animals, genetic modification and stem cell research.
