About us

The ISIS pulsed neutron and muon source at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. ISIS is owned and operated by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), part of UK Research and Innovation.

ISIS produces beams of neutrons and muons that allow scientists to study materials at the atomic level using a suite of instruments. It supports a national and international community of more than 3000 visiting scientists per year who use ISIS for research in physics, chemistry, materials science, geology, engineering and biology.

The Head of the Computing Division is responsible for a team of nearly 50 staff delivering a range of computing capabilities to support the ISIS programme –including data reduction software and hardware, business systems and IT support.  This newly created division is expected to grow further to support the increasing role and importance of scientific computing and a new portfolio of computational science projects for data analysis.

About the role

We now have an exciting opportunity to manage and lead the work of the new ISIS Computing Division to deliver to both internal (within ISIS) and external (within STFC) customers. You will develop the wider ISIS computing and facility IT strategy as well as influencing the STFC and  laboratory strategy. You will work closely with the Scientific Coordinator for ISIS scientific computing to implement the scientific software strategy and priority projects so that the facility stays at the forefront of computing for neutron scattering and muon spectroscopy.

You will manage the financial and resource aspects of the Division, recruit staff including within the STFC computing graduate and apprenticeship schemes, develop staff through training and coaching, ensure best practice and a continuous improvement culture and oversee the safety of Computing Division staff.

As Division Head, you will report to the ISIS Director. You will participate in the wider management of ISIS as a member of the ISIS Management Committee. You will have close communication with the ISIS senior management team and communicate internally across a range of scientific and technical teams.

You will communicate externally across STFC departments and key STFC stakeholders (including internationally) and provide a range of reporting to both internal and external bodies and committees. You will foster relationships with computing colleagues and lead collaborations across the STFC National Laboratories in addition to participating in wider STFC corporate activities as appropriate. In particular you will work closely with STFC Digital Infrastructure and Scientific Computing Departments to ensure the most effective delivery of expertise and services for both ISIS and STFC.
