About the role

The ISIS pulsed neutron and muon source at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in Oxfordshire is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. ISIS is owned and operated by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

ISIS produces beams of neutrons and muons that allow scientists to study materials at the atomic level using a suite of instruments. It supports a national and international community of more than 3000 visiting scientists per year who use ISIS for research in physics, chemistry, materials science, geology, engineering and biology. ISIS is the world’s most productive spallation neutron and muon source. This role is within the Accelerator Control Systems section of the ISIS facility.

You will be responsible for developing the applications and graphical interfaces of the control system of the ISIS particle accelerators. This will include the software, especially the control screens, used in the permanently staffed control room to operate the accelerators. You will also integrate the control system with external packages, such as those used for diagnostics by physicists studying the machine and by engineers to improve reliability and performance. There will be scope to gain experience in either machine learning development or support for such, with training provided as required.

Supporting ISIS accelerator operations is another important part of this role, including helping to provide periods of out-of-hours support for the control system (after sufficient training and experience).

Day to day activities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Gathering and development work for ISIS accelerator equipment owners:
    • Design, creation and revision of controls screens
    • Design and revision of software interfaces to hardware
    • Adding and editing to configuration of distributed hardware interfaced with controls system
    • Development work on other software, to access the controls systems.
  • Maintenance of logging systems and investigation of anomalies
  • Investigation and solution implementation for controls system software or hardware issues.

Shortlisting Criteria

Essential:

  • educated to A level (or equivalent) including math or science
  • experience with software development in a language such as C, C++, C#, Java.

Desirable:

  • BA (Hons) or equivalent in mathematics, science or engineering discipline
  • knowledge and experience of working with Linux systems, particularly in a business environment
  • knowledge and experience of databases
  • knowledge of web application development
  • knowledge/experience in control systems engineering
  • good written communication skills.

Interview Criteria

Essential:

  • familiarity with software development in a language such as C, C++, C#, Java
  • demonstrable commitment to ongoing learning and professional development
  • strong problem-solving skills and positive approach
  • willingness to work in a radiation environment.

Desirable:

  • knowledge and experience of working with Linux systems, particularly in a business environment
  • knowledge and experience of databases
  • hard science or engineering background
  • experience with interfacing/communication with external hardware
  • knowledge of web application development
  • experience in user interface design
  • willingness to do ‘on-call’
  • ability to work in a team.
