Background

The RAL Space, Space Engineering & Technology Division is recruiting Systems Engineers in order to support a growing number of ongoing test facility programmes. This covers the detailed design, integration and testing for facilities for two major satellite test campaigns for Earth Observation missions, and in the long term, will provide you with opportunities to provide technical leadership of a range of projects involving support and test equipment for space hardware at all stages of the project lifecycle; from pre-project feasibility studies, design, build, testing and calibration.

After the test projects are complete, it is intended that you will continue within the division as specialists for the production of support equipment for future test campaigns, and so will involve all stages of the project lifecycle, from proposing new work, pre-project feasibility studies, design, build, commissioning and operation during customers’ testing. You will be offered longer term professional development opportunities in Systems Engineering specialisations and Technical Programme Management.

List of duties/responsibilities:

  • Systems engineering input to existing MGSE design for thermal vacuum test projects
  • Leading the requirement definition and flow down process
  • Management of design during detailed design activities
  • Detailed project work in planning, executing and reporting of tests, commissioning, verification, calibration activities
  • Commissioning and operation of Ground Support Equipment for vacuum test
  • Management of significant work packages and/or small projects
  • Management of junior members of staff within the systems engineering group
  • Conceptual design for future ground support equipment projects 
  • Preparation of proposals for future lines of work
  • Investigate future ideas with academic and industrial partners.

Contacts and Communication:

  • Regular contact with external customers and suppliers
  • Technical oversight of (overseas) supplier’s work
  • Regular contact with a variety of space engineering and scientific support staff both internal and external to STFC
  • Regular contact with RAL Space senior management team
  • Will be required to talk to the press and members of the public about your projects  
  • Will report directly to Senior Systems Engineer or Group leader depending on the grade.

Shortlisting & Interview criteria

Essential:

  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Physics or equivalent experience (S)
  • Expertise in mechanical and or thermal design and analysis (S&I)
  • Systems engineering experience on aerospace or scientific instrument or test facility projects (S&I)
  • Experience in one project throughout lifecycle (S&I)
  • Experience making recommendations to collaborators and “subject matter experts” (S&I)
  • Good computer skills (S)
  • Experience with design and/or analysis software tools (S&I)
  • Ground support equipment design and verification experience (S&I).

Desirable:

  • Experience of scientific instrument testing (ground, suborbital or orbital) (S&I)
  • Space project experience (S&I)
  • Experience in the application of a range of ECSS standards (S&I)
  • Metrology experience (S&I)
  • Thermal test experience (S&I)
  • Experience of proposal writing (S&I)
  • Experience using DOORs.
