ISIS is the world’s most productive spallation neutron source — providing beams of neutrons and muons to enable scientists to study the structure and properties of matter for the benefit of science and engineering in the UK and abroad.

We are currently looking to recruit 3 Mechanical Technicians to work in the Experimental Operations Division.

The Technician role involves working as part of a team supporting our existing Neutron and Muon beamlines. This can include installing and building beamlines, components and sub-assemblies from engineering drawings, ensuring all systems and assemblies are in good working order. You would also be expected to provide support and fault finding skills to enable visiting scientist to conduct experiments successfully and working on development projects to increase the capabilities of ISIS.

In your role you may need to work in specialised areas, such as gas safety systems. If this is a requirement of your particular role it will be discussed at interview and training will be given to you.

ISIS operates four 50 day cycles per year, during these cycles ISIS operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week so some over time is required for all these posts and in addition on-call is required for these roles (see appendix A below).

Appendix A - Overtime and On-Call rates

Overtime Rates
 
Overtime rate for week days and weekends - 1.5 x basic hourly rate.
 
Overtime rate for attending call outs - 2 x basic hourly rate.

On-Call Allowance for standing by  
 
On Weekdays - for a period of more than 12 hours - £20.40
 
Weekends and Bank Holidays - for a period of more than 12 hours - £40.80
 
Call-Out payment  
 
General - Call-Out to resolve a problem - £20.40
 
Between 12.00 midnight and 05.30 or at any time on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day - £30.60.

Essential:

  • served a Mechanical Apprenticeship with NVQ level 3 or higher qualification in Engineering or relevant equivalent experience and qualification in Manual Machining
  • ability to machine bespoke components and precision hand fitting and assembly skills
  • ability to work to Engineering drawings
  • good attention to detail
  • good communication skills
  • good knowledge of Health and Safety practice in a workshop environment
  • highly motivated and able to work well as part of a team
  • willingness to learn new skills and techniques
  • able to work to deadlines.
