The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) has over 20 years’ experience in providing Engineering Apprenticeships, the Apprenticeship Scheme provides an excellent training ground to equip individuals with the relevant skills and experience for their chosen careers within the Science and Engineering arena.

An STFC apprentice will undertake 4 years paid supervised training.  The salary is competitive and the Apprenticeship is an ideal start to a career in Engineering.

List of duties/responsibilities

Apprentices are employed on a 4 year training placement. The first year is spent training off-site at Oxfordshire Advanced Skills at Culham, where apprentices are taught the basics of machining, welding, electronics and electrical wiring. 

During years 2 to 4, apprentices are based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory site undertaking on-the-job training via placements on a rotational basis in the chosen discipline. This provides extensive experience to broaden the apprentices’ knowledge and provide exposure to the full spectrum of working in a sophisticated cutting edge facility. These placements take place within various workshops/departments within the Central Laser Facility (CLF), RAL Space, Technology and ISIS Neutron and Muon Source departments. One day per week is spent continuing with their academic studies on day release at the training facility typically studying towards a diploma.

Electronic Apprentices will have the opportunity to learn about innovative state of the art high speed electronics, from single integrated circuits to huge data acquisition systems.When fully assembled these systems are used in scientific research all over the world.

Electrical Apprentices are given the opportunity to work within a spectrum of electrical jobs. This can involve work as varied as installing large, high voltage conductor cables to work as small as soldering delicate components under a microscope.

Mechanical Apprentices use novel and technology-enabled processes to contribute to the manufacture of mechanical parts and assemblies. This supports a broad range of engineering requirements on both large and small precise sizes using Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) and conventional machining techniques.

Contacts and Communication

As an STFC Apprentice you will communicate to staff across STFC at all levels.  You will work as part of a team as well as working on your own. You will also have contact throughout your apprenticeship with college tutors and visitors to the site.

Personal Skills and Attributes

We are looking for individuals who have or will have achieved 5 GCSE passes at Grade C/4 or above including Maths, English and a Science. You must be self-motivated, enthusiastic about learning, hardworking and demonstrate an interest in engineering.
