​The National Satellite Test Facility (NSTF) will further expand the world class set of co-located and open-access facilities at RAL Space in Harwell, Oxfordshire for the assembly, integration, environmental testing and qualification of space payloads and satellites. Access to these co-located, world-class facilities will ensure the UK space sector remains a world-leader in space technology for decades to come.

Following investment of £99m by UK government, the NSTF supports the goal of capturing a 10% market share of the global space market, predicted to be worth £400bn pa by 2030. STFC RAL Space, part of UK Research and Innovation is seeking a talented individual to fill this new position, to attract and secure its future customers, ensuring the success of this flagship facility right from the start.

Job Description

  • this is a senior Business Development role to lead and drive forward the business development vision, objectives and plan for the NSTF at RAL Space, building upon the original NSTF business case and 2018 BD NSTF plan. Take the lead in gathering intelligence to further define its market areas within Earth Observation, Science, GNSS, Telecommunications, UK and other Governmental, and fully commercial ‘New Space’ missions
  • work intimately with the NSTF technical and user support offices to be a trusted team member, providing a high quality service and competitive pricing to prospective customers
  • respond to general enquiries, RFIs, ROM prices, RFQs and ITTs coming into the facility from a wide range of institutional and commercial sources.  Act as the primary communication channel and external interface for the NSTF team, out to external customers and key stakeholders
  • identify and grow strategic partnerships with space agencies, satellite manufacturers, SMEs and Research Institutes, supporting senior academics, managers and executives in their upcoming mission testing requirements
  • take on and grow an existing pipeline of leads and opportunities of around £70m in value to contract win, to ensure the long term, sustainable operation of the NSTF
  • work closely with RAL Space communications and business development team to promote the NSTF through various channels; online, through engaging talks and tours around the NSTF facilities, in productive meetings, through exhibitions and talks at major UK and international events
  • work with other parts of STFC and the Harwell Campus to support inward investment and co-location of NSTF users
  • report to RAL Space Head of Business Development and Head of NSTF Operations, occasionally reporting progress directly to STFC Executive Board
  • be willing to take on line management responsibilities in future as the Facilities BD team expands.

Shortlisting and Interview Criteria


  • technical background, degree in science or engineering plus membership of professional institute or equivalent
  • experience of working in a Satellite manufacturing, payload and/or satellite EVT/AIT/AIV environment
  • evidence of significant roles in bidding for large industrial satellite procurements (e.g. ESA mission programmes)
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills.


  • higher education and/or PhD or equivalent
  • CRM experience (MS Dynamics or similar)
  • key account management experience
  • team/line management experience.
