About the Role

We are looking for a talented and experienced software engineers to build Web applications and tools designed to meet our customers’ needs. The role will require software development across the full stack, from front-end Web / user-interfaces to server-side components, and often requires integration with a range of underlying technologies such as Big-Data, HPC, AI and Cloud. The successful candidate will be involved in all stages of the project lifecycle, undertaking requirements gathering and planning, design and implementation and ongoing support. Projects may last for few weeks or a few years and are usually delivered by a small team working closely with an industrial customer. 

Duties include:

  • building, testing and deploying Web applications, tools and services on cloud platform
  • visiting clients and liaising with commercial partners to develop collaborations
  • use case analysis and capturing user and functional requirements
  • creation of high-quality documentation, reports and Web content.

If successful you will join a growing team of world class software developers within the Hartree Centre’s Research Software Engineering team, working closely with the HPC Software Engineering and Data Science groups.

You will work with business development personnel to develop collaborations with industrial partners and public agencies. Some of the work will be commercial in confidence and subject to IPR rules around public disclosure.

You will have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects, so an ability to communicate effectively with scientists, industrial clients and academic colleagues from different backgrounds is essential.

Projects will typically come from our Innovation Return on Research (IROR) programme, which partners with companies across the Chemistry and Materials, Life Sciences and Engineering and Manufacturing sectors and the Bridging4Innovators programme, which uses Hartree technology to improve business productivity; and the Liverpool City Region 4.0 programme, working with small businesses in the local area. The choice of project will depend to on your existing experience and contacts, but the common thread, aligned to the Hartree Centre mission, is to deliver easy-to-use, innovative and scalable solutions that address real industry problems.

About You

You will have a background in software engineering, educated to degree level or equivalent in a computing related discipline. We are looking for candidates with core skills in full stack Web and Enterprise application development. Knowledge and/or experience in HPC, Big Data, AI related areas will be an advantage, but is not essential.

Shortlisting Criteria

Essential:

  • educated to degree level or equivalent in a computer related discipline
  • experience building Web applications and/or mobile applications with at least one high-level programming language (e.g. Java, Python, Node.js)
  • experience with data-tier technologies such as RDBMs/SQL and NoSQL
  • excellent written communication skills. 

Desirable:

  • basic knowledge of Linux.

Interview Criteria

Essential:

  • experience building Web applications and/or mobile applications with at least one high-level programming language (e.g. Java, Python, Node.js)
  • experience with data-tier technologies such as RDBMs/SQL and NoSQL
  • excellent verbal communication skills
  • can work as part of a team and independently
  • able to travel in the UK and occasionally abroad
  • software project experience and ability to construct work plans and deliver against them.

Desirable:

  • good customer facing skills and an aptitude for exploring use-cases and capturing user requirements
  • experience of working with commercial partners or within a commercial research environment
  • some experience in one or more of: data analytics, natural language processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, visualisation.

UKRI supports research in areas that include animal health, agriculture and food security, and bioscience for health which includes research on animals, genetic modification and stem cell research. Whilst you may not have direct involvement in this type of research, you should consider whether this conflicts with your personal values or beliefs.
