About us:

The STFC Digital Solutions Department in STFC are responsible for the delivery of the enterprise Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure and services that underpin the STFC scientific programme of activities and campuses. The work we do within the Department is key to protecting the organisations assets and is an enabler for the work of the scientific community here at STFC.

STFC’s investments in new digital capability, innovation and partnerships with industry specialists are globally significant for science and research. This new role will be important for the on-going support and future development of the Network and Communications environment of STFC Digital Solutions and STFC science as a whole going forward.

Overall Purpose:

Digital solutions provide a comprehensive network and communications environment to support the work of STFC and partner organisations. This includes a range of technologies and environments including Voice, Data, Email and unified communications.

Specifically this role is to provide expertise in the development, support and maintenance of the full network and communications environment supported by Digital Solutions, including project development, fulfilling complex service requests, resolving incidents and supporting the service desk as appropriate.

Key duties will include:

You will be responsible for both the STFC network and communications services and work under instruction from a Senior Engineer to deliver project work associated with service improvement for both services and also the support of the day-to-day operational services.

You will also:

  • undertake minor and complex installations or configurations within the area of both networking and telephony with significant autonomy
  • work within a small team on the development of new services or configurations across both services
  • planning, installation, testing of voice and data network connections
  • work closely with the local Estate Services regarding infrastructure requirements for new builds and other cabling activities around site
  • respond and take responsibility for specific requests (tickets) for service at the direction of the Senior Network and Communications Engineer
  • supervision of any additional effort needed to complete installations
  • represent the organisation internally and externally on matters relating to the job purpose.

Our teams are predominately based at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) and Daresbury, whilst this role will be based at our Rutherford Appleton laboratory, there will be a requirement to occasional travel to all STFC sites.

Shortlisting Criteria:



  • a relevant computer science degree (or Higher Education qualification) or relevant subject matter and industry experience.


  • ITIL Foundation
  • PRINCE 2 Foundation (or equivalent).

Knowledge and Experience:


  • experience of a wide-ranging network and communications environment across technologies such as Voice and Data in a organisation with a diverse range of business systems and requirements
  • proven working knowledge of developing and supporting a range of the following technologies;
    • IP routing and configuration of routers
    • network switches and configuration of switches
    • TCP/IP protocols
    • DNS/DCHP/Radius servers
    • video conferencing protocols
    • wired and wireless networking
    • firewalls
    • telephony (analogue, digital and VOIP)
    • telephony (handsets, exchanges).


  • experience of working within the Public Sector.

  • a thorough understanding of a broad portfolio of skills including, but not confined to, network planning; network design; voice and data technologies; systems installation and decommissioning; IT management; change management and network support
  • able to assess, evaluate and prioritise particularly when under time pressure
  • ability to produce clear and concise written operating procedures and documentation
  • able to work on own initiative and supervise others
  • be organised, methodical and able to plan
  • good communication, facilitation and listening skills
  • willingness and ability to travel to various STFC sites across the UK, as well as partner and supplier offices
  • participate in the provision of an on call service which is responsible for dealing with out of hours incidents.
