Background

A vacancy exists for an Ancillary Plant Manager in the ISIS Ancillary Plant Section, which is part of the ISIS Accelerator Division. You will manage a small team of up to 6 people and will be responsible for the efficient running of all the ancillary plant installed on ISIS, including the new plant for Target Station 2 (TS2).

You will also be responsible for new work from conception, design and procurement through to installation, commissioning and maintenance.

The ancillary plant includes large evaporative and air blast cooler systems, water treatment plant, de-mineralised and de-oxygenated water production systems, chilled water systems, air conditioning units and compressed air systems. The ancillary plant runs 24 hours – 365 days per year. The role requires a balanced mix of a hands on approach to daily operation of the ancillary plant and office based duties.

List of Duties/Responsibilities:

You will report to the Ancillary Plant Section Leader within the Accelerator Engineering Group, and will be expected to undertake the following duties:

  • establishing and maintaining safe and efficient working arrangements for all staff working within the section to ensure compliance with all safety legislation and relevant regulations
  • regularly review, update and produce maintenance work programs to improve plant reliability taking into account the needs of the ISIS operational program
  • have a hands on approach to get installation and maintenance tasks completed within given timescales
  • assessment of the condition of the existing plant, recommending replacements. This will include participating in technical reviews of existing equipment - in conjunction with the Design Group
  • to oversee the repair of plant breakdowns and make recommendations for preventative measures and identify inefficient/obsolescent equipment
  • technical support of the operation and maintenance function, requiring a practical approach to problem solving
  • record keeping of plant parameters and cooling water sampling test results, including the F gas log book.

You should have:

  • the ability to communicate effectively with all colleagues throughout the ISIS Accelerator Division
  • good writing skills/record-keeping and PC literacy e.g. Windows/Office/CAD etc.

Personal Skills and Attributes:

You will be expected to have experience in:

  • the management of staff
  • working experience of ancillary plant systems
  • project management experience
  • the operation and maintenance of complex ancillary plant systems
  • good interpersonal skills, well-motivated and able to motivate others
  • the ability to work to fixed schedules.

Shortlisting and Interview Criteria

Essential:

  • mechanical engineering apprenticeship or equivalent
  • ONC in mechanical engineering or relevant experience in ancillary plant systems
  • knowledge of control of Legionella within cooling towers
  • understanding of refrigeration systems
  • experience of pipe work installations
  • maintenance of ancillary plant.

Desirable:

  • HNC in mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • formal Legionella qualification
  • F gas safe handling of refrigerant qualification
  • quality of cover letter
  • ability to fault find and resolve technical problems
  • working knowledge of current H&S legislation.
