Vacancy Overview

If you are leaving school or college this year, this could be just the start you are looking for - Service Desk/Computer Operations position at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Didcot, Oxfordshire.

The apprenticeship will take 2 years to complete and you will gain essential computer IT related experience and skills throughout the 2 year fixed apprenticeship.

You will complete the Level 3 IT subject which will develop and expand your technical competencies; knowledge, skills and behaviours and underpinning skills to work within an IT role.

Working as part of the Digital Solutions IT Support team to support and maintain desktop computers, hardware, software and portable devices, whilst providing support and assistant to staff and users throughout the site.

During the 2nd year training will be provided working as part of the HPC (High Performance Computing) team to support management of HPC Datacentre dealing with challenges in heating, cooling and power. 

Service Desk/ Desktop Support  – Year 1

  • through training to support first and some second line business support as part of Service Desk and Computer Operations teams
  • to support Digital Solutions Service desk by Call logging, resolution and escalation
  • to assist with the purchasing/specifying of new hardware (Laptop/Desktops) and software applications
  • to provide software/hardware technical support
  • to provide technical support for Video Conferencing (VC)
  • to support for mobile telephony users
  • to provide technical support by testing hardware, PC upgrades and testing non-standard build software
  • assistance and participation with ICT projects
  • produce clear and concise written operating procedures and support documentation.

Datacentre Operations – Year 2

  • to assist with the Computer Operations Procedure (COP), Disaster recovery procedure (DRP) across all computer rooms
  • ensure computer room floor plans are kept up to date and develop further templates using Microsoft Visio or AutoCAD
  • to provide day to day support in the Operations environment. This will include tape labelling; act on alarm notification (training provided)
  • hardware power/rack/inventory check and update documentation
  • housekeeping tasks, such as backup tape changes and storage of tapes in fire safes. These are done on weekdays throughout the year including holiday periods
  • manual tasks such as lifting floor tiles, moving equipment and assembling/dismantling racking
  • production and updating of documentation of the Operations services and procedures
  • to have an understanding of monitoring systems and how to develop further
  • be able to provide a champion of continuous improvement initiatives particularly in energy saving, environment monitoring and resilience
  • opportunity to develop Linux applications and support existing application such as Nagio/Zenoss
  • to assist and support existing projects. Training provided.

Shortlisting and Interview Criteria

The criteria will be assessed through shortlisting (S), at Interview (I) or both (S&I).


  • minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C (or equivalent) – including Maths, English and Science (S)
  • qualification to include a relevant field. (S)


  • experience of  PC-based computer systems and applications (S)
  • some knowledge of Microsoft Desktop Products (I)
  • some experience of configuring Smartphones (I)
  • understanding of the importance of IT security (I)
  • sufficient practical skills to do manual tasks such as assemble/dismantle racking, moving awkward/heavy objects and changing power supplies or fans in equipment (I)
  • a flexible attitude to working hours and the work they will undertake along with a commitment to meeting customer needs. A willingness to learn and use new skills (I)
  • experience in using Microsoft application, programming language and web design. (I)
