STFC is one of nine organisations that have been brought together to create UK Research and Innovation (UKRI); a new organisation with a vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-leading position in research and innovation.

Our graduates join us in a permanent position, starting a real job from day one. Graduates enjoy two years of formal soft skills together with technical training and development, as well as a direct route to professional accreditation. STFC graduates have the opportunity to build on their degree, taking their understanding, knowledge and skills to a new level in a dynamic, creative, collaborative culture.

Working with other engineers and scientists we specify, design, procure and develop bespoke mechanical and electrical equipment and complex systems for the facility.

As an engineer in the CLF you get to work with an unparalleled range of state-of-the-art laser technologies to make our ground breaking research possible. Your expertise could inspire new products and equipment that changes lives around the world.

The facility research is diverse, ranging from plasma physics to medical imaging and this is reflected in the variety of engineering systems required to support it; vacuum, cryogenic, high pressure, exotic gases, motion control systems, target fabrication, diagnostics, optical systems and mechanical and electrical services.

Our project engineers are responsible for delivering engineering solutions for scientific requirements within a project environment, and full lifecycle engineering from concept to commissioning of one off components and larger, complex systems.

Further responsibilities will include:

  • mechanical design of vacuum, gas, optical and cryogenic systems
  • design and management of facility hardware including plant and services
  • management of the installation, testing and commissioning of multi-disciplinary engineering systems

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • you will support the on-going operational programme and collaborate with others to deliver the Facility funded upgrades or commercial development programme
  • this will primarily begin by hardware design using SolidEDGE and then follow the product through manufacture, installation and commissioning

Training and support will be provided to develop skills in:

  • vacuum technology
  • gas and pressure systems
  • motion control systems
  • optical systems
  • machining and materials
  • simulation and Mechanical Calculations (fluids, stress, heat transfer)
