This placement is to work in a team providing computing support services at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. The aim is to provide the student with a broad range of experience of the issues involved in providing computer support services in a scientific environment.

We choose the best technologies we can to deliver IT solutions that meets the latest needs of our customers who are world-leading scientists and engineers.

Computing is essential to the science that STFC supports. We have placement opportunities for support assistants to join the Facilities Computing group. Our team delivers IT services and infrastructure. Other teams in the group develop and maintain unique web-based software and are responsible for the National Laboratories SharePoint farm.

We are based in STFC’s neutron and muon department, ISIS. ISIS is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. Our suite of neutron and muon instruments gives unique insights into the properties of materials on the atomic scale. Computing lies at the heart of many ISIS activities.

This year we have the opportunity for a sandwich student to join our growing group to help support the IT services and infrastructure used by the ISIS facility and other large scientific facilities across STFC’s National Laboratories. You will benefit from working on services used across many departments but also, by being embedded in a scientific department, be close to the action!

Summary of Key Duties

As part of a team you will be involved in many aspects of service operation, from applications support, IT infrastructure, network support, to problem and incident management. This will give first-hand experience of supporting and managing services for an enterprise. This placement will enable you to work on various systems that meet the evolving needs of our staff and visitors.

You will benefit from working in a supportive team and have exposure to enterprise service operation tools in the real world.

Training will be provided as necessary. In addition to a full induction and “on the job” training, you will have opportunity to subscribe to professional online tutorial sites, attend conferences, undertake various soft skills training and take part in our organisation-wide events where you can network with other students and graduates.


The business computing environment consists of Windows Active Directory Domains using Microsoft Office and Outlook as the email client.

You should have good interpersonal skills and be committed to delivering an excellent customer service.

During your placement you will working in a busy helpdesk environment and be expected to:

  • communicate and work with fellow IT professionals within the team on a daily basis
  • communicate with users, scientists and management to understand their IT needs and assist them
  • undertake support of Windows desktop systems (and possibly some Apple and Linux systems also) and carry out agreed system software maintenance tasks
  • assist in the investigation and resolution of issues relating to applications
  • assist in database support activities
  • assist in investigation and resolution of network problems and with specified maintenance procedures
  • receive and respond to routine requests for security support. Perform security administration tasks and maintain relevant records and documentation
  • investigate problems in systems, processes and services. Assist with the implementation of agreed remedies and preventative measures
  • identify, register and categorise incidents. Gather information to enable incident resolution and promptly allocate incidents as appropriate. Maintain records and advise relevant persons of action taken
  • take an active role in meetings
  • write documentation for technical and non-technical users.

  • at university, enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and required or have requested to take a year out of studies to gain experience within industry (S)

  • studying for a degree in a Computing or IT related subject, or a science student interested in computing work (S&I)
