Brief Description

Salary: £19,136
Grade: UKRI-STU
Contract Type: Fixed Term - 6 months
Hours: Full Time
Closing Date: 28th October 2018

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. We’re trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science, technology and Engineering.

STFC is one of nine organisations that have been brought together to create UK Research and Innovation (UKRI); a new organisation with a vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-leading position in research and innovation.

Each year we offer opportunities to undergraduate sandwich students to gain practical experience, working alongside technical experts at the forefront of scientific research. We offer an invaluable experience with exposure to world class science and technology, and the opportunity to develop working relationships that continue well after your placement has finished.

The ISIS facility at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is a world-class centre for the investigation of modern materials ranging from pharmaceuticals to advanced technological materials and engineering components. The crystallography group at ISIS operates a suite of several state-of-the art world-class powder diffraction instruments and one dedicated single crystal diffractometer. These are used by the UK and world-wide science community.

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities

The current SXD instrument has been in operation since 2001. The instrument is dedicated to structural science in chemistry, physics, mineralogy and related fields of research. Recent upgrades of other instruments at ISIS have demonstrated significant increases in the number of neutrons on the sample (flux) and hence better experiments. The objective of this job is to carry out computer simulations for a future upgrade of the SXD instrument with supermirror guides to enhance the flux and enable new science. These simulations would start from the existing instrument as a baseline and explore various options of guide geometry and reflectivity. The program McStas will be primarily used. The student will be guided and can expect help whenever difficulties occur. The expected outcome is a report based on these simulations which will describe possible options for an optimised SXD instrument.
