About the Role:

The Hartree Centre is looking to recruit keen HPC Systems Administrators to the Platforms and Infrastructure Group that are willing to learn and have a demonstrable interest in supporting novel technology. We operate a service desk according to ITIL best practice and the role will include providing L2 support to the service desk.

We are looking for someone with excellent communication sills who can communicate effectively with all stakeholders from team members to users of the service. You will report to the Team Leader, Systems Support Group.

Responsibilities will include:

  • performing routine system administration tasks such as monitoring, tuning, hardware fault detection and resolution
  • delivering a professional, customer-focused, second and third line support to users of Hartree Centre services. Ensuring incident tickets are resolved or escalated within SLA targets
  • identifying and implementing configuration changes as required
  • undertaking supervised and unsupervised project work, ensuring deliverables are met on time, to specification and within budget
  • identifying areas for process or operational improvements such as automation; project-manage implementation of such improvements as required
  • creating and maintaining accurate and complete documentation of procedures and configurations
  • maintaining shift log records of activity
  • maintaining and developing user documentation
  • providing mentoring support to other members of the group.

Shortlisting and Interview Criteria:


  • degree in a scientific or technical subject or equivalent relevant experience
  • dedicated previous experience in UNIX/Linux
  • ability to diagnose system faults and analyse problems
  • strong ability to understand the perspective of our customers
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • strong interpersonal skills
  • good organisational, time management and problem solving skills, including the ability to prioritise effectively
  • ability to work independently and within a team.

We don’t expect any one candidate to have all of these attributes, but we are looking for people with three or more from the list:

  • a demonstrable understanding of large-scale storage systems
  • specialist knowledge of virtualisation platforms. For example: VMware and KVM
  • strong scripting skills in Bash, Perl and/or Python
  • ability to work in a large-scale production IT environment
  • a good working understanding of Information Security principles and best practice
  • ITIL Foundation.

To attain Band E we are looking for people to demonstrate expertise in at least one of the following:

  • infiniband and TCP/IP networking design and operation
  • virtualisation, Cloud and container technologies. For example VMware, KVM, Docker, Kubernetes, Singularity
  • design and operation of SAN storage and Parallel File Systems. For example IBM Spectrum Scale or Lustre
  • configuring and managing HPC workload managers. For example: IBM Spectrum LSF, SLURM
  • team leader or supervisory experience
  • strong presentation skills.
