General duties:

Creating conceptual designs of Multi-Layer Insulation (MLI) blankets for space and ground-based hardware (plus associated test equipment) using 3D-CAD models and a knowledge of MLI manufacturing techniques. You will also have involvement in developing conceptual MLI designs into 2D manufacturing drawings.Working in accordance with MEG and Department ISO9000 procedures.

Shortlisting Criteria


  • Level 4 (e.g. HNC) or equivalent (or higher) qualification in a Design related discipline
  • experience of working in a designer role
  • current experience with 3D design software
  • quality of cover letter.


  • experience of working in a mechanical designer/draughtsperson role
  • experience of working within a quality management system
  • MLI manufacturing experience, or similar experience gained in other industries (e.g. upholstery, clothing design etc.)
  • current experience with SolidEdge (ST7 or later).

Interview Criteria


  • ability to relate 2D and 3D information
  • consideration of design constraints
  • good spatial reasoning
  • oral and written communication is clear, concise and accurate
  • good verbal communications skills including the ability to explain technical concepts effectively
  • attention to detail.


  • enthusiasm for own work and interest in RAL Space
  • understanding of physical properties of MLI (or similar materials).
