The Hartree Centre is transforming UK industry through high performance computing, big data and cognitive technologies. It is home to some of the most technically advanced high performance computing, data analytics, machine learning technologies and experts in the UK. Reporting to a Senior Management Accountant, the Hartree Management Accountant will work as part of a small team, responsible for supporting the Hartree Director and senior staff in financial planning and management of an annual operating budget of £6m and capital investment of £115m (spread over 5 years).

You will be responsible for maintaining effective financial planning and control of departmental and project budgets, playing an active role in:

  • the process of bidding for and winning new projects
  • on-going financial management of the department’s projects and activities
  • performance management including budgeting, forecasting, reporting and analysis.

The Management Accountant will be expected to develop a thorough understanding of all aspects of departmental activities from a financial perspective and be well integrated with the department, maintaining excellent working relationships with the project managers, business management staff and the senior management team. You will also need to communicate effectively within the wider UKRI & STFC Finance teams in order to coordinate departmental finances with STFC’s overall financial planning and management. 

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • advise project managers on costing and pricing project proposals in accordance with council policy and other financial aspects of project proposal preparation and support them in negotiating for new business
  • attend bid review meetings, providing advice on completion of bid forms and the bid process
  • set up and maintain budgets and forecasts for projects in Oracle Project Accounting
  • produce monthly management reports and ad hoc reports for project managers using OBIEE and Hyperion management information tools
  • support project managers in budgetary control and forecasting of their projects, reviewing actual expenditure and income against budget, analysing variances and promptly following up significant issues
  • assist in preparation of any financial reporting required by customers and funders and liaise with them in connection with reviews or ad hoc queries on financial issues
  • prepare annual budgets in hyperion planning
  • attend senior staff meetings and other project meetings as required as well as various finance directorate meetings.

Shortlisting Criteria


  • worked in a financial environment and have a broad knowledge of accounting procedures
  • knowledge of MS Office
  • good communication skills (both written and oral), with the ability to deal with staff at all levels.


  • experience of Oracle or similar financial system
  • AAT qualified or part qualified.
