About the role

A vacancy has arisen for an IT Helpdesk Manager at the UK Astronomy Technology Centre in Edinburgh.

You will be responsible for the management of a small IT Helpdesk team, providing support to users in a mixed environment including Windows and Linux desktops, business and technical applications, network provision and telecoms. 

As well as dealing with requests and providing end user support, you will be responsible for the monitoring of Helpdesk performance and ensuring that the team provides an excellent level of customer service.  

You will also be required to work closely with the IT Development Team in both the specification and implementation of new services and facilities.

You will be expected to work with staff at all levels across the site.  You will act as line manager for the helpdesk staff and will report to the Head of IT. You may also be called upon to liaise with external service providers, both within STFC and commercial suppliers.

Good interpersonal skills will be essential to the job and the ability to work under pressure while maintaining a professional attitude and good customer focus is required. 

The Helpdesk team is small but support a wide range of technologies and applications so excellent all round IT skills and knowledge will be beneficial. Adaptability and the ability to learn new technologies is key.

  • educated to Degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • a good approach to customer service
  • ability to work under pressure
  • proven experience of working in a helpdesk environment
  • solid working knowledge of Windows technologies
  • experience in supporting desktop applications
  • good working knowledge of local area networking
  • awareness of IT security.


  • experience of Windows Server technologies (e.g. System Centre, Exchange etc.)
  • experience of virtual environments (e.g. HyperV)
  • good working knowledge of PC hardware
  • working knowledge of Linux (desktop and/or server)
  • experience of the management of telecoms systems (VoIP, PABX)
  • staff management experience.
