About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. We’re trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science and engineering.

STFC’s ISIS facility uses a particle accelerator to produce neutrons and muons which are used to carry out research in the physical and life sciences. The facility performs cutting edge research into the structure and properties of materials at an atomic and molecular level.

About The Role

The ISIS facility is looking for a leader capable of  managing the team of twenty staff  responsible for the accelerator and targets integrated control system. You will hold a degree or equivalent qualification in an appropriate discipline with previous control systems experience.

You will work with the division head to develop strategies, policies and plans relating to the development, operation and maintenance of the ISIS accelerator control system; setting and controlling the group’s budget; overall management of the group and ensuring the required skill base meets its current and future requirements. You will be accountable for the control and instrumentation subsystems, electronic interfacing to all other accelerator and target subsystems and the physical implementation of the control system. Ideally you should have knowledge of particle accelerator control systems such as EPICS, TANGO or VISTA, embedded  hardware and PLC systems. Knowledge of IEC61508 and ATEX regulations is advantageous but not essential.

You will have strong leadership skills, be able to take the ‘system view’ of a project and interact with scientists and engineers to identify and incorporate their requirements.
