BGS is seeking to appoint a highly motivated and experienced engineer to assume the role of Head of Marine Operations at our offices in Edinburgh.

Marine Operations is a team within the BGS Marine Geoscience Directorate that provides engineering services to support offshore Geo - Scientific projects. The projects may be BGS-led, collaborative, or externally funded academic or industry projects.

Primary Tasks:

  • lead and manage BGS Marine Operations, to deliver the BGS Marine Geoscience Strategy
  • produce an annual operating plan for MOPS in conjunction with the Marine Geoscience Science Director
  • deliver the MOP’s annual operating plan
  • manage MOPS facility: building, workshops, yard space, office space, assisted by BSG Estates and MOPS staff
  • manage and task MOPS staff: electrical, mechanical and design engineers, plus support staff, 9 staff currently, but anticipated to grow by 4-5 in the next couple of years
  • directly Line Manage 3-4 staff in each sub-group (electrical, mechanical, design, support)
  • maintain oversight of/delegate project management of
    • deployment projects (surveys) using existing equipment: Rockdrill 1, Rockdrill 2, Vibrocorer, Gravity Corer
    • maintenance of the equipment above
    • design and development projects: Battery Vibrocorer, upgrading existing equipment, adding new capability to existing equipment (e.g. increasing autonomy, robotisation, artificial intelligence of RD2)
  • participate on offshore projects if required
  • maintain oversight/delegate administration of training and certification of staff
  • assess resources for potential and upcoming projects
  • monitor MOPS project budgets and expenditure
  • responsible for all MOPS Health and Safety (risk assessments, safe systems of work, inspections, PPE etc.), assisted by BGS H&S
  • responsible for reviewing all contracts for projects involving MOPS, assisted by BGS Legal Services and UK Shared Business Services
  • represent BGS externally as the lead contact for BGS Marine Operations: attend conference booths, assisted by BGS Business Development and other MOPS staff
  • represent BGS Marine Geoscience on the BGS Technology Forum.

Other Tasks:

  • will report to the Science Director for BGS Marine Geoscience
  • will liaise closely with the Team Leaders for Ocean Geoscience and Continental Shelf Geoscience. These are the two teams that make greatest use of BGS MOPS, although other BGS areas may also access the facilities (e.g. Minerals, Volcanology, Seismology), and other research centres (e.g. NOC) and universities.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • must be chartered (CEng).

Desirable:

  • university degree desirable, but probably likely if asking for chartered status.

Experience

Essential:

  • engineering management experience or extensive experience in an appropriate role to be able to demonstrate the level of experience required
  • project management experience
  • supervisory/management experience
  • budget management experience
  • risk management experience.

Desirable:

  • experience in a marine engineering environment
  • certified project management skills
  • experience of computer-aided facility management software
  • contract experience.

Knowledge

Essential:

  • broad knowledge of mechanical and/or electrical engineering.

Desirable:

  • knowledge of design engineering.

Working hours will be 37 per week excluding lunch breaks.
