About the role:

Your responsibilities will be twofold: one, to provide daily support and leadership regarding Apple hardware/software within RAL Space. Two, to lead initiatives on Apple technologies across multiple departments within STFC. The appointment can be at either Band D or E dependant on your experience and abilities.

You will be responsible for providing our internal clients with all aspects of IT support, ranging from remote monitoring of business-critical products, to PC/Server and network.

Duties include:

  • lead the development of enterprise solutions for our growing Apple user base
  • responding to user requests for support, ensuring calls are handled in a professional manner
  • installing and configuring computer hardware operating systems and applications
  • monitoring and maintaining computer systems and networks
  • providing support to colleagues across STFC, with a focus on producing extensive, easy-to-understand documentation and procedures for all aspects of your work
  • testing and evaluating new technology.

The work of the IT support group section is described in a series of internal procedures. You will be required to work according to these procedures. These procedures may be audited as part of the Department's ISO-9001 accreditation.

You will be appointed at either Band D or Band E of STFC’s staffing hierarchy, depending on the strength of your skills, experience and qualifications.

Shortlisting Criteria:

Essential:

  • A-levels or equivalent in relevant subjects such as Computing or Information Technology
  • extensive experience in a second or third-line support role
  • experience of supporting Apple Mac OSX, preferably in an enterprise environment
  • evidence of developing support strategies for Apple products.

Desirable:

  • experience of supporting Windows 7-10 in an enterprise environment
  • advanced certification of a relevant standard, such as MCSE or Apple equivalents
  • experience of Windows Server 2012, 2016 and Active Directory
  • quality of cover letter.

Interview Criteria:

Essential:

  • thorough understanding of integrating Apple products into a networked, domain environment
  • strong ability to think creatively; to seek and accept change
  • demonstrate a self-motivated, pro-active approach to improving existing computer systems
  • excellent technical skills with an ability to troubleshoot Apple hardware and software problems
  • experience of creating high-quality documentation
  • experience in back-office hardware and software, with a proven track-record of supporting systems relied upon by hundreds of users
  • demonstrate a friendly, approachable manner in dealing with customers
  • demonstrate the ability to work both alone and as part of a team
  • demonstrate excellent communication skills with colleagues at all levels.

Desirable:

  • proven people management skills
  • experience of supporting Linux systems.
