We have excellent permanent opportunities for a talented Category Manager who, under the direction from the Senior Category Manager/Head of Procurement, will provide professional direction to the Purchasing community and where required, manage buyers. We are able to offer flexibility with location, this role can be based in Newport or Swindon.

You will develop category strategies for defined products and services and fully analyse expenditure and key business drivers within your area of responsibility.  You will be expected to identify opportunities for improvement in supplier dealings to deliver cost savings and quality improvements, along with market analysis and application and developing an external category network.

You will have attained the relevant CIPS qualification or have significant sector experience at the appropriate level and be willing to work towards CIPS accreditation.

Within this role, you will be required to:

  • demonstrate a very good working knowledge and application in supporting the development and management of the end to end OJEU tendering process
  • ensure the successful delivery of contracts that adhere to all relevant EU legislation, value for money principles and commercial awareness
  • ensure that audit trails are created, governance and due diligence are embedded, and value for money analysis undertaken
  • ensure that the defined best practice procurement processes and policies are followed to deliver maximum use of e-Procurement Systems and processes and optimise savings opportunities through:
    • agreeing objectives and critical areas of spend with key stakeholders and strategic suppliers
    • market developments
    • competitive tendering, supplier base consolidation, ethical contract practices etc.
    • manage continuous supplier management and improvement programme.
  • meet annual targets such as sourcing savings, partner satisfaction, supplier satisfaction and where appropriate, people development
  • provide analytical support to the Head of Procurement in support of strategy, the delivery of benefits, all relevant legislation and change management
  • fully analyse expenditure and key business drivers within area of responsibility.  Identify opportunities for improvement in supplier dealings to deliver cost savings and quality improvements
  • gather and analyse internal and external data relating to procurement activity across Supplier base to gain an understanding of purchasing trends
  • analyse expenditure and key business drivers within area of responsibility.  Identify opportunities for improvement in procurement processes and supplier dealings to deliver cost savings and service enhancements
  • manage continuous supplier improvement programme
  • manage relationships with internal category stakeholders and wider partners
  • mentor and demonstrate leadership abilities
  • manage multiple complex procurement activities end to end independently which may vary greatly in regards to spend and partner numbers
  • operate within a category management structure which may also include direct reports
  • develop, drive and deliver key category strategies within your allocated area of spend.

Shortlisting criteria

Essential:

  • experienced in advanced purchasing techniques (e.g. OJEU) and purchasing platforms
  • proven ability to communicate verbally and written with a wide range of internal and external customers
  • excellent team-working skills
  • accurate and a keen eye for detail
  • motivated and willing to learn
  • high level of analytical skills
  • coaching and mentoring experience
  • specific detailed experience of working within a Category Management approach.

Desirable:

  • Member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply
  • excellent level in Microsoft Office products; Excel, Word and Outlook, confident using Excel for analytical purposes
  • experience of e-Sourcing applications
  • experience managing a team.
