Programmes Directorate commissions and oversees the delivery of the STFC science programme in universities and its own laboratories.  Its role is to support the UK’s world class research programme in astronomy, particle physics, particle astrophysics and nuclear physics as well as STFC's programmes in education, Innovation, training and public outreach. For both established and new national and international projects, we are the trusted point of contact for many different stakeholders. Our dedicated teams ensure that, in an increasingly challenging financial environment, our funds are allocated to maximise the output and impact from our science programmes.

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities

As part of a team based in the STFC’s Programmes Directorate you will support meetings and events both internal and external, provide support to the subject teams in Programmes Directorate in the provision of peer review, management information and data and also in the delivery of programmes and schemes, such as the reporting and monitoring of awards. This will include preparation of background information concerning project management, finances and risk for panel members of peer review and oversight committees as well as general support for committee members.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Strong interpersonal skills, both written and oral, and the ability to interact effectively at all levels both in STFC and externally with the scientific community are essential. You will be capable of working effectively within a team environment and contributing to team motivation, as well as working with minimal supervision. The successful candidate will have a strong ability to think creatively, to take on responsibility for different tasks and to seek and accept change and continuous improvement. You should be able to demonstrate a high level of drive, enthusiasm and focus on the achievement of goals.

You should have an enthusiasm for the science we do and be able to demonstrate good analytical skills, as well as the ability to prioritise and organise work to meet deadlines.

 

Qualifications

Essential:          
 

  • obtained first degree bachelors or Masters, (not doctorate) in a relevant subject in either 2017 or be due to receive it in 2018
  • expected or have achieved a 2:1 or above
  • the right to live and work in the UK.

Desirable:

  • background in science or engineering.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • good written and presentational skills
  • ability to act on own initiative
  • good analytical skills
  • ability to work effectively within a team environment and with minimal supervision
  • ability to plan, prioritise and work to deadlines
  • good negotiation skills.

Desirable:

  • effective management skills including organising and delegating work to meet deadlines 
  • good financial skills including managing budgets.
