STFC Digital Solutions provides the core ICT infrastructure and enterprise services that underpin STFC programme activities and campuses. This includes providing corporate business applications, primarily using Microsoft software, in response to business requirements.  We are looking for a graduate who will perform an important role as a Junior Applications Engineer, to support and develop ICT solutions of significant benefit to the organisation using Microsoft web application and database technologies. Candidates will require a sound technical background in software support and development and an enthusiasm for deploying new technologies in support of scientific research and delivery.

Summary of Key Duties

You will work closely with Digital Solutions staff and other ICT colleagues to provide expertise in the support and development of applications and databases provided by Digital Solutions.

Key duties will include:

  • fulfilling service requests, resolving incidents, supporting the service desk
  • undertaking project work to enhance the use of business applications according to agreed specifications 
  • creating prototypes to demonstrate solutions and to confirm requirements
  • developing web based solutions using appropriate programming language, database system and tools, within the agreed timescales and budgets
  • ensuring compliance of developments to STFC standards
  • creating and updating user and technical documentation
  • testing, deployment and the maintenance of solutions
  • providing continuous improvements by flexible and timely solution enhancements
  • providing technical advice and support to colleagues for the effective use of available ICT systems and software.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Knowledge of Microsoft Office or Office 365 applications. Development and support of technologies covering some of the following:

  • SharePoint
  • SQL and relational database design
  • HTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery
  • Microsoft Visual Studio for developing C#, VB.NET, ASP.NET solutions
  • Learning Management Systems
  • Identity and Access Management
  • Customer Relationship Management
  • Agile Project Management.



  • obtained first degree bachelors or Masters, (not doctorate) in a relevant subject in either 2017 or be due to receive it in 2018
  • expected or have achieved a 2:1 or above
  • the right to live and work in the UK.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience


  • experience of web programming/scripting languages
  • experience of relational database design and development
  • experience of UI design for web sites and applications
  • experience of translating user requirements and functional specifications into appropriate design, architecture and technology
  • experience of participating in functional and non-functional testing of software
  • experience of developing clear, concise documentation
  • knowledge and awareness of IT security issues.


  • sound knowledge of the capabilities of Microsoft SharePoint, in particular for workflow developments and integration with external systems
  • knowledge of web form technologies and design together with integration and form processing scenarios
  • experience of mobile application development
  • experience of using Microsoft Visual Studio for developing C#, VB.NET, ASP.NET solutions
  • experience of rapid prototyping and agile development techniques
  • experience of using a code versioning system.
