The STFC Finance Directorate seeks to recruit a Sandwich Student based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) Oxfordshire in the Capital Management (Fixed Assets) Team. You will also receive all-round experience within a Finance Department should the opportunities arise, as well as visiting other UK based STFC sites. Your appointment will be for 9 to 12 months in duration depending on your start date.

Summary of Key Duties

1 Asset Management – maintenance of the Fixed Asset Register:

  • carry out physical verification of STFC owned assets
  • carry out impairment checks on STFC owned assets
  • carry out reviews of assets coming to the end of their useful lives
  • ensuring asset disposals are in line with STFC Policy
  • maintaining good relationship management with Asset Holders.

2 Asset Record Creation – standalone items and Capital Projects:

  • reconciling large data sets using MS Excel
  • reviewing spend for non-capital entries
  • setting up asset records on Oracle
  • tagging and photographing assets
  • adding costs to existing assets
  • journaling non-asset costs
  • checking Fixed Asset Register is updated correctly
  • maintaining good relationship management with Management Accountants and Project Managers
  • working closely with the shared service centre (transaction processing is outsourced).

3 Administrative Support: 

  • maintaining Capital Management Team work plan 
  • producing Team operational statistics
  • archiving
  • activities suitable for the role and experience.


Following training, you are expected to be self-motivated, follow policy, meet deadlines and to work diligently through the workload assigned to you.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

You should be undertaking an Accountancy or Business degree with a keen interest in working in Finance.  This role requires a proactive individual who is highly organised with strong analytical and communication skills.




  • at university, enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and required or have requested to take a year out of studies to gain experience within industry
  • right to live and work in the UK 
  • should be undertaking an Accountancy or Business degree.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience


  • knowledge of MS Word and Excel
  • experience of working within a team environment
  • experience of working to deadlines.


  • work experience in an office or similar environment
  • knowledge or experience in using a Finance system (e.g. Oracle).
