The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest science research organisations. We’re trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science and technology.

Each year we offer opportunities to undergraduate sandwich students to gain practical experience, working alongside technical experts at the forefront of scientific research. We offer an invaluable experience with exposure to world class science and technology and the opportunity to develop working relationships that continue well after your placement has finished.

ISIS is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford in the United Kingdom. Our suite of neutron and muon instruments gives unique insights into the properties of materials on the atomic scale. We support a national and international community of more than 3000 scientists for research into subjects ranging from clean energy and the environment, health care, through to nanotechnology and materials engineering, and on to fundamental studies of materials. The neutronics group is responsible for the nuclear analysis used to support the design and optimization of upgrades to the target, reflector and moderator assemblies as well as new neutron instrument beamlines. The main focus of the neutronics group is large scale simulation of the facility but we also have an increasing experimental program to gather data to support future facility designs.

Summary of Key Duties
On the neutronics sandwich student placement, you will work closely with a team of nuclear analysis experts to develop and test codes, tools and nuclear data. This could be testing how a new radiation transport code scales on large scale high performance computers, writing code to automate analysis and 3D visualisation of results or analysing experimental data on new moderator materials.  You will also help perform experiments at the ISIS facility to help benchmark code performance and improve the nuclear data that is used in the simulations.

  • working with the neutronics team to perform nuclear analysis calculations and benchmarking
  • working with the neutronics team to develop and test tools and codes for nuclear data analysis
  • to perform simple experiments and analyse the data
  • produce written reports and presentations on the work performed.
