The Group works at the interfaces of chemistry and engineering, developing new materials in order to support leading edge science.


Summary of Key Duties:

  • perform materials testing on composite materials including at low temperatures
  • assist in running of the lab waste chemicals service
  • assembly and test of components for advanced superconducting magnet systems.

Responsibilities:

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • a strong awareness of chemical safety
  • ability to use MS Office, including accurately entering information into a database
  • ability to perform internet searches for chemical safety information
  • a strong interest in chemistry and material science
  • methodical working habits
  • happy to work on one’s own
  • strong numeracy skills and ability to use spreadsheets to calculate materials testing results is desirable.

 

Qualifications

Essential:     

  • at university, enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and required or have requested to take a year out of studies to gain experience within industry 
  • right to live and work in the UK.

Desirable: 

  • A Level Physics (or equivalent).

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential: 

  • good basic chemical handling skills.


Desirable:

  • some interest in engineering/physics, preferably with some practical experience.


Personal Skills, Qualities and Attributes

Essential:

  • good communication skills
  • demonstrate good team working capabilities
  • the willingness to learn new skills, both technical and non-technical
  • open minded and flexible in relation to the type of work assigned to them.


Desirable:

  • happy to work on one’s own.

You must be on a sandwich degree and be taking the industrial placement as a recognised sandwich year to be eligible. You must also have the right to work in the UK. Please ensure that you include a reference from your University as part of your application form.
