Primary Tasks:

  • manage the National Geological Repository (NGR) Core Scanning facility, including responsibility for health & safety, and establishing operational procedures
  • undergo the suppliers’ training and then train others in the use of the facility
  • overall responsibility for the servicing and maintenance of the equipment
  • scan or directly supervise the scanning of difficult, complex and unusual core
  • assist in the interpretation of data for other scientists, including working with XRF and IR spectra
  • establish a commercial and scientific user base and promote the facility
  • solve problems.

Other Tasks:

  • communicate the work of the UK Geo  informatics platform team through conference presentations, attendance at workshops and through written papers
  • continuous professional development to maintain an up to date and relevant skills profile.


  • significant experience operating and interpreting data from at least two different types of automated core scanners
  • background in geoscience
  • undergraduate degree or equivalent work experience
  • demonstrable back catalogue of relevant previous work
  • ability to coach or mentor other staff
  • must show potential to effectively manage multiple simultaneous tasks, demonstrate problem solving ability and work in a flexible manner
  • must be able to communicate effectively (written and orally) with other staff, scientists and developers as well as senior managers and clients
  • must demonstrate the ability to work well in a team.


  • one or more years’ FTE experience with multiparameter, XRF, X-Ray CT and Hyperspectral core scanners
  • several relevant scientific publications
  • willingness to work out of hours and weekends on an occasional basis.
Working hours will be 37 per week excluding lunch breaks.
